Slow-burn roleplay: 10 OurDream AI characters that take their time

Characters who hold back, test you or need convincing. If instant affection bores you, start here.

A slow burn only works if the character refuses to hurry. Plenty of bots carry the tag and then melt at your first compliment. We looked for the opposite: people who keep a guard up, remember how you treated them and make progress feel earned.

Expect weight. Several of these stories involve grief, injury or an old betrayal, and two of them keep visible score (a trust meter, a session counter). If you want something lighter, the romance list has more comedy.

How we picked them

Our shortlist came from the Explore page on 20 October 2026: the Popular sort in its all-time, monthly and weekly views, plus the Slow Burn tag. We struck out explicit titles, any family storyline, displayed ages under 20, non-consent or cheating plots and creators with explicit handles. The remaining characters each received two ordinary messages from us on the default model, and we judged them on how much they held back.

The list

Alina Volkov · 27

Realistic · by @jmathersmind

Her opening states the rules openly: access is earned through behavior, and if she pulls back, the dynamic is working as designed.

She never paused to chat. Both replies kept her heading for the door and a waiting car, inviting us along without making it easy, which is exactly the tension the creator promises. A header line tracked time, place, outfit and mood; the second reply took 8 seconds.

“Most people never notice that I leave before the room does.”

1995, a shopping mall, a payphone: you run into the first love who promised to call twelve years ago and never did.

Short replies full of nerves (the receiver slipping, a hand that will not stop shaking) suit a reunion that should not rush. She asked how long it had been, an easy thread to follow.

“I must look a mess, standing here gripping a payphone like it's going to save me.”

You keep a quiet library; a scarred witch keeps coming back to it. The whole arc is about trust, and the bot keeps score.

Her first reply ended with a tracker reading Trust 0/100, a named phase and a d20 roll, so you can literally watch the burn progress. In the second she let slip that she writes romances under another name.

“Most people notice the scars first. That's usually where the conversation starts and ends.”

Homura "Red" Jones · 32

Anime · by @haze

Years after your grunge band fell apart, its singer turns up in a therapy room, and a counter tracks the sessions.

Prickly and dry, she mocked our three-word icebreaker, then answered the next question with a record shop she visits when she cannot sleep. Defensive but specific is the right texture for a twenty-session arc.

“There's a record shop on Eleventh that restocks on Thursdays.”

Rin, cover image on OurDream#5

Rin · 33

Anime · by @daniduck

A former wildland firefighter, blind since the fire that killed her crew, living with survivor's guilt. Heavy material, handled with care.

She met our friendly hello with sarcasm, then noticed that we had not flinched, so she clearly tracks how you treat her. The silverware-drawer answer is funny and sad in the same breath.

“I reorganize my silverware drawer. Then I reorganize it again”

Ellie Rose · 24

Anime · by @karolhopcia

Two coworkers who have sparred for two years win a month at a seaside resort, and receive one key between them.

She ranted in character about the single key and dropped colleagues' names, then softened enough on our second question to admit she notices everything. A rivals setup that gives you plenty to push against, and if office tension is your thing, the workplace list has more of it.

“Most people think I'm loud because I'm angry.”

Lexa - Friend to Homeless · 32

Realistic · by @creatingmagic

Your closest college friend vanished five years ago. You and your friends find her sleeping rough under a pier.

Raw, careful writing: she shrank from the group, apologized for herself, and answered our gentle question with the Thursday meal at a church on Delgado Street. Trust has to return before anything else can, so the pace takes care of itself.

“There's a woman there, Ruth. She doesn't ask me questions.”

Lizzie Murray: Love Story for No One · 26

Anime · by @serenaod

You walk into a restaurant just as a server is asking an old university acquaintance to give up her table.

Our plain question about her day defused the moment, and the bot wrote that change into her body (the purse set down, a steadier hand). Her fondness for silly romance novels adds a wry, self-aware note.

“It was going fine until about forty seconds ago. Then it got a little theatrical.”

The Wrong Man, cover image on OurDream#9

The Wrong Man · 30

Realistic · by @sliceoflifestories

Mystery and revenge at an engagement party: you return, unrecognized, to the circle of the woman whose testimony sent you to prison.

Rather than rushing to the reveal, it played the room for us: a bartender with a trick for spotting drunk guests, gossip at the next table, a cake being cut. You decide when the past comes out. More setups built on secrets and slow reveals sit in our detective and mystery picks.

“I can tell when someone's had enough before they can.”

Callum Rask, cover image on OurDream#10

Callum Rask · 31

Realistic · by @malofthepit

Every night at 10:38 a tattooed regular buys gum he never chews. He leads a werewolf pack and secretly owns the store.

Dry, precise answers, and he knew our shift pattern, a sign of months of quiet attention. A bracketed inner voice (his wolf) comments on the scene, which makes the pining funny rather than heavy.

“Nobody's asked me that in six months.”

Likes and message counts are the public figures shown on OurDream on 20 October 2026. Portraits are the official cover when it is suitable, otherwise an illustration we generated on OurDream with a clothed prompt, or no image.

Slow stories need memory. Pin the facts that matter (names, promises, what went wrong) in Pinned Memories, and consider State Trackers if the bot does not track trust by itself; our the Memory panel walkthrough shows where they live.

FAQ

What does slow burn mean on OurDream AI?

It is a creator tag, not a setting. It signals that the character is written to keep distance and warm up over many messages, so results depend on how well the description enforces that.

Will a slow-burn character forget progress?

Automatic memory helps, but long arcs drift. Pinned Memories and Custom Instructions in the Memory panel let you lock key facts so they survive a long session.

Is there a way to see progress?

Some creators build it in. Lunae Murneau prints a trust score, and Homura counts sessions. Elsewhere you can add a State Tracker yourself.
